Preparing your application for the recruitment process
You are most certainly in the midst of preparing your application for the recruitment process. If this is not the case, it’s time to get started! Don’t wait until the very last minute! You need to submit your application between February 2nd and 5th.
In order to help you tackle this process, we suggest you follow these four steps:
1- Take a good look at yourself
Knowing yourself is essential to preparing your application. It will enable you to showcase your personality and your experience as well as find the articling position that best suits you. You need to know your strengths in order to showcase them and your weaknesses in order to overcome them. Determining your main fields of interest will also help you make the right choice when the time comes to accept an articling offer.
2- Selecting a firm
Do some research on the firms that interest you by visiting their websites and checking out the attorney profiles. Take note of those that appeal to you, for their respective strengths, fields of practice, specialties and so on.
We have put together an array of valuable information to help you get familiar with LRMM and prepare yourself for the recruitment process. You can check it out on our website stages-lrmm.com and blog. For example, you can learn more about our recruitment committee and check out our articling students’ confessions in order to find out what articling at LRMM is really all about.
Another essential tool for preparing your application is to take part in events organised by your university and the firms in order to meet the lawyers who work at them. Establish a contact, ask questions and demonstrate your interest. This will empower you to have a more complete portrayal of the firms and determine what suits you the best.

3- Prepare your cover letters and CV
Highlight your strengths in your cover letter and curriculum vitae. If your average doesn’t happen to be top-notch, try to capture the attention of the recruitment committee in another way!
Make yourself stand out and showcase your strongest points, your personality and what makes you one of a kind. And keep in mind that your academic record is not the only factor taken into consideration, although it’s important.
Your social involvement, your different work experiences and your passions can say a lot about your personality and your talents. For example, practicing a sport at a high level can demonstrate great drive, perseverance and team spirit. Don’t leave anything to chance!
It’s very important to tailor your letters for each firm—and make sure they are free from spelling mistakes! If you have met any attorneys at the firm, mention them in your letter and explain how meeting them has influenced your choice. You want to do your articling at LRMM? Explain to us why you would like to do it with us and the reasons we should consider your application.
4- Letters of recommendation
They are not required, but you can include a letter of recommendation with your application. If an employer or professor can testify to your experience and skills, it could be an asset.
In conclusion, just like for any job interview, preparation is key. The more you know about the firms and the attorneys who will be recruiting you, the better equipped you’ll be for the recruitment process. The research, the meetings, the questions you ask and so on are the elements that will enable you to start off on the right foot and make enlightened choices.
