LRMM, a firm like no other
Choosing which of the various law firms in the Greater Montreal area best meets your needs so as to complete your articling is a major decision. You may already have come to know the reputations of various firms through word of mouth at your university but how can you know which firm is right for you?
Well, we here at Lapointe Rosenstein Marchand Melançon « LRMM », have decided to help you get a clearer idea of what we’re all about.
In addition to our excellent reputation in a wide range of legal areas and recognized expertise in business law, LRMM is a human law firm that is committed, dedicated and welcoming, where client satisfaction is as important as training the next generation of lawyers. The testimonials of our students and articling students prove it: we are a law firm like no other.
A large firm on a human scale
LRMM combines more than 60 years of experience brought together by the 2010 merger of two large firms with deep roots in Quebec: Lapointe Rosenstein and Marchand Melançon Forget.
The former firm, renowned for its expertise in business law, was a multicultural firm very active both locally and internationally.
The second, well known for its expertise in insurance and tax law, was already very well established in Quebec’s French SME market.
Today, LRMM has nearly 140 employees, including around 75 attorneys, notaries and other experienced professionals, as well as a dozen up-and-coming students and articling students.
The firm has a well-established reputation for excellence. Many of our attorneys are regularly mentioned in recognized publications. Jane Bogaty, Bruno Floriani, Michael Kaylor, Paul A. Melançon and Ruth Veilleux for example, are among the most recommended attorneys in the 2023-Canadian Legal Lexpert® Directory.
Jane Bogaty, Christopher Deehey, Bruno Floriani, Perry Kliot, Eric Maldoff (Emeritus Lawyer), Paul A. Melançon and Mélissa Rivest are also cited in Best Lawyers in Canada.
Bruno Floriani was also named International Licensing Lawyer of the Year in Canada – 2015 by Global Law Expert He has also been recognized as a leading expert in the Franchising field by Chambers Canada and as a leader in The International Who’s Who of Franchise Lawyers since 2009.
Bruno Floriani and Michael Kaylor are often recognized by Who’s Who Legal – Canada, as some of the country’s leading voices in their respective practice areas.
This year, LRMM once again ranks in the top ten Quebec firms by Canadian Lawyer which determines the rank of major regional firms in Quebec.
At LRMM, we strive to bring together excellence, team spirit and geniality. We believe that our office’s overall atmosphere is one of the elements that makes us stand out from most other Montreal firms. Our members feel a strong sense of belonging right away, no matter their role in the firm.
“My instincts told me that here, my colleagues would be both friends and mentors, and I was right.” – Testimonial of an articling student
Practically everybody knows one another, across all departments, and there is great sense of respect between colleagues. Young lawyers, students and articling students all play an integral part in the firm. Moreover, thanks to LRMM’s Young Lawyers Committee, our young attorneys are encouraged to build close relationships. This committee organizes prospecting activities, social activities, after-work cocktails, barbecues and sports outings that bring colleagues together to share memorable experiences.
A tightly knit team: dedicated employees
LRMM is a great team of attorneys, notaries, paralegals, administrative staff, translators, students, and articling students. Each link in the chain counts, and collegiality is one of our core values.
Rather than encouraging competition among firm members, we work together toward a common goal: to serve our clients effectively.
“At LRMM, you’re not just a number – you’re part of a team.” – Testimonial of an articling student
Our main areas of expertise include commercial law, transactional law, tax law, insurance law, commercial litigation and banking and arbitration.
We operate in the same fields of practice and the same types of files as other firms, with a generally more flexible structure adapted to both a national and international clientele.
LRMM is a member of TerraLex®, a group of 155 firms located in one hundred countries. Thus, we earn the trust of every level of business client, from national SMEs to international corporations.
Our open-mindedness is reflected both in our clientele and in our team members. We are proud to be a very multicultural firm. Eleven different languages are spoken in the office, which makes our firm a more enriching environment for everyone
Flourishing students and articling students
Supervision is the key to successful training. That’s why at LRMM, the Recruitment Committee assigns a mentor to each student and articling student on their first day at the firm. Our mentors are eager to share their wealth of experience and knowledge as they regularly monitor the projects completed by students and articling students and guide them in their learning.
When we offer a student one of the articling positions available in our office, we give them the opportunity to quickly get involved and play an active role in the files. We also ensure that they receive coaching and customized training so that they can fully realize their potential. At LRMM, we offer a flexible system that does not require the rotation of articling students. All of our articling students are therefore always exposed to different areas of law, including litigation and commercial law. Wherever possible, we want to leave the largest possible room for our students and articling students to take the initiative and to work in areas
that are of personal interest to them.
In a future article, we will explain the recruitment guidelines during the recruitment process in detail.
“The diversity of the mandates and the attention paid to the training of the articling students motivated me to apply.” – Testimonial of an articling student
A sincere social commitment
It is also very important to the members of the firm to make a contribution to society, which explains why LRMM has, for a number of years, been involved in various causes that we take to heart:
- The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer: On several occasions since 2013, a team of cyclists has pedaled from Montreal to Quebec City for two days to raise money and to advance cancer research. Nearly $200,000 has been donated to Montreal’s Jewish General Hospital Foundation through the participation of the cyclists and their sponsors.
- Santropol Roulant: Every summer, a team of students and articling students has participated in volunteering to cook meals and to deliver them by foot or by bicycle to persons with reduced autonomy.
- The LRMM au féminin Committee: a unique network of clients, business contacts and professionals from the firm. These committed women are united to increase the visibility of women in circles of influence and to promote business opportunities between women. The committee organizes networking evenings, volunteer days, conferences and various other events.
A colourful, modern new work environment
We believe that it is essential to work in the best possible conditions, and as we spend a lot of hours at the office, it’s important to feel comfortable.
In April 2016, the firm set itself up in a new work environment: modern, bright and warm offices in the heart of downtown. We are now located at 1 Place Ville Marie, a central, easily accessible location.
Our new facilities include user-friendly workspaces and several multifunctional meeting rooms with state-of-the-art technology.
